TUPPER LAKE - The village board pulled some reserves from its budget before passing it at a special meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The board decided to reduce the amount of fund balance it will use in the 2013-14 budget by $17,000, from $125,000 to $108,000. The idea is to let the balance build up in case of tough budget years in the future, said village Clerk Mary Casagrain.
That change brought the tax levy to $1,784,885, a 1.63 percent decrease from the current year, which is under the $1,858,811 allowed by the state's tax cap.
Total spending will be $2,493,922, a decrease of 1.28 percent from the current year.
The tax rate will decrease by 15.1 cents, or 1.2 percent, bringing it to $13.04 per $1,000 in assessed property value.
The budget includes $10,000 to put toward a vehicle replacement fund for the fire department. The fund will have to be more formalized in the future, but board members said they wanted to start putting away a little bit now.
The village board unanimously approved the budget with little comment. Village Mayor Paul Maroun noted the board went through the budget line by line in workshops.
"We think this budget is sound," he said. "I don't think anybody can be upset with a reduction of 15 cents a thousand in their assessed value."
