WESTPORT - A Saratoga County man was killed after he crashed an all-terrain vehicle on a logging road near Lake Champlain.

Lewis-based state police said in a press release Tuesday afternoon that Tyler W. Middleton, 49, of Ballston Spa, was operating a 2002 Polaris ATV on a logging road off Mountain Springs Road in the Essex County town of Westport when, for unknown reasons, the ATV "exited the drivable portion of the road and traveled down a small embankment.

"The ATV overturned," the release said, "pinning Middleton underneath it."

State police responded to the crash at about 11:20 p.m. Essex County Coroner Walter S. Marvin III pronounced Middleton dead. An autopsy, conducted Tuesday at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to pressure on his chest. The death has been ruled accidental.

The road Middleton was on provides access to the Nichols Pond Association, police said. He was traveling by himself and was discovered by people who went looking for him when he failed to return home.

Police are trying to determine the cause of the accident. An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact state police in Lewis at 518-873-2771.
