CHAMPLAIN - The Saranac Lake softball team won its season-opener Tuesday, and came up big in the sixth inning to get the job done on the way to a 9-8 victory over Northeastern Clinton.

Trailing 6-1, the Red Storm scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab the lead for good. The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to cut their deficit 9-8 but could not produce another run in their final at-bat.

Senior Brittany Tschirhart went the distance to earn the pitching win for Saranac Lake. She struck out nine Cougars batters.

"The girls did well," Saranac Lake head coach Diana Schwartz said. "My girls really wanted to win this thing, and they did not give up. We had a huge sixth inning. (NCCS) They had some errors that we took advantage of, but we hard our bats going as well."

Nicole Viscardo paced Saranac Lake's nine-hit attack with a double.

Madalyn Tucker had a strong day at the plate for NCCS with a pair of triples. Stephanie LaValley started in the pitchers' circle for the Cougars and recorded nine strikeouts before being replaced in the fifth inning.

Saranac Lake next plays at home Thursday against Peru starting at 4:30 p.m.
