SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake baseball team opened the season with a loss Monday, falling 9-5 to Northeastern Clinton in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action on the Red Storm's diamond.

Getting the bat on the ball wasn't the problem for Saranac Lake. The Red Storm accounted for 10 of the 22 combined singles the two teams rapped out during the game. Timely hitting and mistakes in the field, however, were a concern for first-year head coach Bryan Munn.

On offense, Munn said he needed more players producing at the plate, and in the field, Saranac Lake committed five errors.

"We had 10 hits, but ultimately, it was untimely hitting," Munn said. "Our hits just didn't come at the right time. Defensively, we have to tighten up. You can't expect to win games when you have five errors."

Saranac Lake led only once in the contest, taking a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first inning. After both teams went scoreless in the second frame, the Cougars took control with seven runs over the next three innings. NCCS scored four times in the top of the third for a 5-2 edge.

After the Red Storm answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to cut their deficit to 5-4, NCCS tacked on three more runs in its next two bats to extend the lead.

Josh Rabideau, Marcus Lefebvre, Jacob Jennett and Alex Lamberton contributed two singles each for the winners as they combined to go 8-for-14 at the plate. Kyle McCarthy, Kevin Sousa, Reece Tucker and Garrett Begore each had one hit for NCCS.

Junior Brad Shumway paced Saranac Lake at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Trent Fitzgerald also had a solid outing for the Red Storm with two singles and three RBIs. Logan Wood and Jon McCabe added two singles each for Saranac Lake and Grant Strack had one hit.

Strack started on the mound for the hosts and went five innings before Fitzgerald took over. Strack took the loss at pitcher. Mason Letourneau tossed five innings for the Cougars to earn the pitching win and Sousa locked up the victory working the last two frames. In three innings pitched, Fitzgerald allowed three hits and gave up just one run.

The Red Storm next plays on the road Wednesday at Peru.
