Adapt to keep Lake Placid ER

April 9, 2013

To the editor:

Re: "Health care in transition," April 6

Dr. Dowidowicz didn't do his position to close the Lake Placid emergency room any favors with his condescension towards the Lake Placid hospital and the people of Lake Placid.

To the people of Lake Placid, the Lake Placid hospital is not a "silo." It was built as a memorial hospital - Placid Memorial Hospital. The people of Lake Placid dedicated time and money and effort to build and improve a facility they could be proud of, and proud of it they have been. Over the years, it was a vital and essential part of the community, and it served the community exceptionally well.

Dr. Dowidowicz says that to "survive the future with the way things are going, you need to adapt." The people of Lake Placid don't need to be preached to. They are a very smart bunch.

Adaptation is necessary, but maybe it is Adirondack Health that needs to adapt. Maybe Adirondack Health needs to adapt to the fact that they have a rural medical facility 10 miles down the road, and Adirondack Health should figure out how to increase its value and keep its ER open. Maybe Adirondack Health needs to understand that Lake Placid, as the premier Adirondack tourist destination, has thousands of visitors a year and needs a 24/7 ER. Maybe Adirondack Health needs to adapt to the fact that not every facility is going to be 100 percent economically efficient. Maybe Adirondack Health needs to adapt to the fact that rural medicine always has challenges and problems, and the way to solve them is not to automatically close the smaller facility.

If the condescension expressed by Dr. Dowidowicz toward the Lake Placid hospital and the residents of Lake Placid is typical of the thinking of Adirondack Health, that is sad and arrogant.

Keep the Lake Placid ER open.
