Rails to trails, trails to rails

April 9, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

There has been a lot of commentary in the newspaper about this subject recently. In our opinion, this is a no-brainer. You have a railroad infrastructure that exists, which is valuable and who knows how much more valuable in the future, and you have an opportunity to create a trail system which would be hugely beneficial to our resident community and our tourist community.

Now the no-brainer is both should be able to coexist. There is a passionate group on each side of the equation; therefore, the need is to find a way to provide for both. People say, "You can't do this," "You can't do that." Our response to that is, people have walked on the moon; anything is possible if people put their energies into creating the result.

Therefore, we should preserve the railroad (if it goes away, it will never come back), and we should create the trail so the two can coexist.

Very truly yours,
