Bolstered by three players from Saranac Lake and one from Lake Placid, the Chazy Flyers girls hockey team has claimed a national championship.
Brooke Reid, a senior who captained the Lake Placid high school team this past season, along with Red Storm players Jordy McDougall, Sydney Battistoni and McKayla Duffy joined up with a host Beekmantown skaters to win USA Hockey's Under-19 girls Tier II national championship tournament in San Jose, Calif.
The Flyers captured the title Sunday evening, knocking off the Keweenaw Storm of Michigan 3-2 in double overtime. The game-winning goal was scored by Beekmantown standout Kallie Villemaire at the 3:31 mark of the second extra period on an assist by Battistoni.
The Flyers scored the lone goal of the first period off the stick of Villemaire and then went up 2-0 on a goal by McDougall at the 5:45 mark of the second period. Keweenaw, which beat Chazy 6-2 in first-round action, then rallied with a pair of goals in regulation to forge a tie and force overtime.
Villemaire was the top scorer in the tournament for the Flyers, finishing with six goals and six assists for 12 points.
All four area skaters recorded points for the Flyers, who finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, which included a 5-0 shutout victory over the East Coast Wizards in a Sunday morning semifinal matchup.
Reid led the local quartet in scoring during the tournament with three goals and three assists for six points. Battistoni, who was paired with McDougall on defense throughout the tournament, was next with a goal and five assists, McDougall finished with one goal and a pair of assists and Duffy had a goal and an assist.
Christina Emery came up big in goal for Chazy in the championship game. Keweenaw outshot the Flyers 30-18, but Emery only gave up two goals while earning the win in net.
