KEESEVILLE (AP) - Authorities say a 51-year-old man has been found dead under a tree he had been cutting down in the woods near his northern New York home.

State police say Daniel Laduke was cutting down the tree in Keeseville, on the Essex-Clinton county line, sometime between 7:30 a.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, when his body was found by a friend. Laduke was pronounced dead at the scene by the Essex County coroner.

An autopsy conducted Sunday determined the cause of death to be crushing injuries to Laduke's chest due to being struck by a falling tree.

Troopers say Laduke was an experienced woodsman who was wearing protective gear at the time, including a helmet, chaps and steel-toe boots.
