Down the river

March 25, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise
As Bloomingdale Elementary School’s fourth-grade students hold a ceremonial launch of a
little wooden boat next to Sumner Brook in Bloomingdale on Friday morning, David Hunt holds up a copy of the book “Paddle the Sea” by Holling C. Holling, a story about a Native American boy’s journey through the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean. With the help of wood carver Mark Paul, right, the students sanded and painted their own boats as well as one, named River Rower, that will eventually be placed in the Saranac River. The boat has an inscription asking any person who finds it to contact teacher Bill Peer and then replace it in the water so the River Rower can continue its journey. The
students will trace the route the boat takes.
