Lake Placid athletes Miles Lussi, Trent White and Karl Schulz joined Northwood student Luke Daniels and Matt Doyle of New Hampshire to represent the East team at the Junior National Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships Feb. 28 to March 2.
Lussi earned a silver medal in the J-2 class (14-16 year olds) special jumping event with jumps of 64.5 and 70.5 meters. Kevin Bickford from the Central Division won the event with jumps of 70.5 and 71.0 meters. Third place went to Ben Loomis.
Daniels, who is from Andover, N.H., finished 12th with jumps of 58 and 63.5 meters. White finished 31st and Schulz was 34th. It was the first trip to the prestigious national event for Schulz and White, who are both members of the New York Ski Educational Foundation junior jumping program.

In the nordic combined individual event, Lussi was again the East's top finisher with a fourth-place finish. Schulz turned some heads after recording the fastest cross-country ski time of the day which brought him up to a 14th-place finish.
Daniels skied a respectable 11th in the cross country to finish eighth overall, while White finished 20th.
The nordic combined event combines ski jumping with freestyle cross-country skiing.
Other events at the national championships were an elimination jumping event in which Lussi finished eighth in the "A" group, with Daniels tied for 15th. In the "B" group, which was won by Doyle, Schulz placed 14th and White was 18th.
In the team jumping event, the East team of Lussi, Daniels, Doyle and White finished fifth.
