PAUL SMITHS - The Paul Smith's College men's basketball team surged late Wednesday night against SUNY Canton but was unable to overtake the lead as the Kangaroos bounced to a 85-72 non-league victory.
"Still down only two to three possessions late in the game we were trading baskets as we could not get stops either through defensive lapses or difficult shots made by Canton," said Paul Smith's coach Joe Akey. "The team's effort tonight was great all night, but we just couldn't get stops when we needed down the stretch."
Canton held a 10-point lead for much of the first half, before Paul Smith's cut the deficit to 38-31 by intermission. The Bobcats stayed hot to start the second half, cutting the lead to one point.
"At that point, we took a couple quick shots, which always hurts us, and they pushed the lead back to eight," Akey said.
Shiva Senthil led Paul Smith's in scoring with 21 points. Alex Medina chipped in 18, while Patrick Wightman had 12 and Adam Klock hit for 11.
Khalid Vaughn led all scorers with 22 for Canton. Tyler Ellison contributed 21 points and Scott Bartensteon had 17.
The Bobcats will now turn their focus to the Yankee Small Conference tournament in Auburn, Maine. Paul Smith's opens Saturday at 9 p.m. against Eastern Maine Community College, a team that beat the Bobcats 68-58 on Jan. 19.
Paul Smith's (5-19 overall, 4-11 YSCC) went into Wednesday's game riding a two-game winning streak after beating Hampshire College 80-39 on Feb. 2 and SUNY ESF 79-73 on Feb. 10.
Following this weekend's tournament, Paul Smith's has one game left on the schedule, a make-up against North Country on Tuesday.
