Downtown Saranac Lake to show outdoor movies during Winter Carnival

SARANAC LAKE - A collection of short videos celebrating the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival "Under the Sea" theme will be shown outdoors in Berkeley Green from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Downtown Saranac Lake committee member and village Trustee Barbara Rice said the idea of having a winter outdoor movie was first discussed last summer.

"It's a crazy idea but we thought that if there is one place where a winter outdoor movie would actually work and people would actually brave the cold, it's Saranac Lake," Rice said in a press release.

Rice said committee members decided to show a collection of family-friendly short videos instead of a long movie so people are more free to come and go. The timing of the event will also allow people to get to the annual Rotary Club Variety Show, which starts at 7:30 p.m.

There will be free hot chocolate and marshmallows for roasting over a fire. Winter hats embroidered with the Downtown Saranac Lake logo will be on sale for $10.

With a high temperature of 18 degrees and between 4 and 8 inches of snow forecast for Friday, Rice encouraged moviegoers to dress appropriately. She said the movie would only be canceled if it is snowing so hard that the videos can't be projected onto the screen.
