Dash is top dog in Carnival Fun Run

SARANAC LAKE - Kyle Dash is a Paul Smith's College All-American cross country runner and skier who loves taking his dog on jaunts through the woods near his home in McColloms.

On Saturday Dash competed in the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Ice Palace Fun Run, and with his 10-month-old husky McKinley running alongside him on a leash, Dash topped the field as the race's overall winner.

Dash completed the 3.58-mile run in 23 minutes to finish ahead of the rest of the pack, which included a record number of 48 entries. A week ago, the endurance athlete for the Bobcats also won his age group in the 25-kilometer classic part of the Lake Placid Loppet cross-country ski race.

Dash said he was a little unsure of how McKinley would handle a road course, but as it turned out, the pair did just fine.

"Usually, we do trail running together, but this was a road race," Dash said. "McKinley was all full of energy early on, but I was kind of pulling him more toward the end."

The nippy weather, made a little colder by occasional wind gusts that kicked up blowing snow, seemed to provide perfect conditions for a Winter Carnival event.

Saranac Lake's D.J. Racette, who is the son of the Carnival Queen Cherie, finished runner-up, 45 seconds behind Dash's winning pace.

"It was an ideal day for a run," Racette said later Saturday while he watched the fireworks and lighting of the Ice Palace. "It was a little windy where it was open, but on the back part of course when we were running in the pines, it was perfect."

Dash said he briefly got lost on the course and had to slow down for the second-place runner for guidance. But once Dash got back on track, he was able to put more distance between himself and the rest of the field.

Bloomingdale's Doug Hazelden finished third in 24:26. Alexei Tumanova placed fourth, and Markus Mohrs was fifth to round out the top five.

Winter Carnival Princess Anastasia Hull, also a distance athlete at Paul Smith's College, was the top female finisher. Her time of 30:04 was also good enough for 13th place overall. She ran the race in her royal robe.

Runners were greeted at the finish with hot chocolate provided by Lake View Deli. Each finisher was draped with medals, which were actually colorful decorated paper fish made by Maria DeAngelo's students at Petrova School.
