SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls basketball team led from start to finish to claim a 48-30 home victory Thursday over Seton Catholic in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

Saranac Lake got points from eight players and improved to 5-6 in the league and 6-7 overall. The Red Storm didn't score in the final period, but by that time, they already had things well under control.

Megan Kilroy and Remy Orticelle netted 10 points each to lead Saranac Lake, which has five CVAC games remaining against the top teams in the league. Nicole Viscardo and Megan Moody chipped in eight points apiece in the win, while Regan Kieffer added six points.

"We have five big games left, and I think this effort tonight was a good stepping stone for the rest of the season," Saranac Lake coach Dave Zerrahn said. "We did a good job moving the ball, especially in the first half, and we played well on defense.

"We've been competitive in every game except our last one against AuSable, and we're hoping to knock some of the big schools off down the stretch here," Zerrahn added. "We have some girls who can play."

The Red Storm, who had a size advantage and more experience than the Knights, took a 12-7 lead in the first quarter and stretched the edge to 28-14 at intermission. Saranac Lake then opened the second half with a 10-0 run to put the game away.

The Knights, who started two freshmen and have no seniors on the roster, finally got their first basket of the second half with 2:35 left in the third quarter when Paige Spittler knocked down a 2-point field goal.

Saranac Lake, which started five seniors, outscored Seton Catholic 20-5 in the third quarter.

Spittler, a junior, paced the Knights with a game-high 15 points. Freshman Samantha Bashaw also tossed in 10 points in a losing effort.

Saranac Lake's next game will be on the road Monday at Saranac Central.
