LAKE PLACID - New York law enforcement authorities will visit here at 1 p.m. Tuesday to explain the state's new, stricter gun control law.
Representatives of the state police and Division of Criminal Justice Services have scheduled forums across upstate New York starting this week to talk about the NY SAFE Act and answer questions about changes in the law governing ownership of assault-style semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. The new law, adopted earlier this month after the Newtown school massacre and West Webster firefighter ambush, also requires background checks for ammunition purchases.
Two state police officials - Col. Thomas Fazio and Assistant Counsel Kevin Bruen - will present the new law and answer questions at the Conference Center at Lake Placid's Excelsior Room.
Sessions with the state officials are also set for Tuesday in Clarence, Endwell, Rochester and Ithaca.
The state has also set up a website and phone hotline to answer questions about the new law: www.nysafeact.com and 1-855-LAW-GUNS.
