Sharing ‘Winter Life’

January 26, 2013
Editorial by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise: Publisher Catherine Moore, Managing Editor Peter Crowley

Look what we found! Well, actually it was Enterprise delivery driver Carl Sorensen who found it and brought it to our attention. Carl is an antique collector and came across a booklet published a century ago called "Winter Life at Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks."

The Adirondack Enterprise, based in the Harrietstown Town Hall in downtown Saranac Lake, published it in 1913, during the time Kenneth W. Goldthwaite owned the newspaper from 1904 to 1917. It is a 50-page booklet that lists Goldthwaite as the publisher and Stephen Chalmers as the editor. It also mentions Mill Thompson as the art editor; he did the initials, decorations and tailpieces on the beginning of every story.

Articles, music, games, costumes and poems about Winter Carnival are very entertaining and would perhaps be fodder for future Carnivals. Other articles are about pioneering, outdoor recreation, summer floating camps, elevations of mountain peaks and a piece of fiction by Mr. Chalmers. There are recognizable local names who contributed to the book, such as Distin, Hunt, Rice, Davis, Donaldson, Thompson, Baldwin, DeGraff, Thurston, Chalmers, Dayton and Wells.

This booklet sold for 25 cents a century ago.

We had this frail copy reprinted for all to enjoy for just $5 (plus tax). It will be available to purchase on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, and will be sold during this year's Carnival, from Feb. 1 to 9.

Just a limited amount will be sold, so get in the spirit of Winter Carnival: Come on down to the office and get your copy.
