OGDENSBURG - The Saranac Lake boys hockey team suffered two one-goal losses this weekend at the Brian Wade Memorial Tournament.
After dropping a 3-2 overtime defeat against Ogdensburg Free Academy on Friday, the Red Storm returned Saturday with a 3-2 loss to the Thousand Islands-Alexandria Bay Islanders.
On Saturday, Saranac Lake fell behind 2-1 after two periods but pulled even when Grant Strack connected for his second goal of the game 8:28 into the third. Zach Walti scored with 58 seconds left in the game to give the Islanders the 3-2 victory.
Chris Spicer and Bradley Shumway were each credited with assists for Saranac Lake, which fell to 3-5-3 overall (1-2-1 CVAC).
Justin Farmer stopped 26 shots in goal for the Red Storm. Thousand Islands-Alexandria Bay held a 29-22 advantage in total shots.
On Friday, Quinn Urquhart scored the equalizer at the 12:32 mark of the third period to knot the game at 2-2. Brandon Mullin then scored the game-winner for Ogdensburg in overtime.
The Red Storm fell behind 2-0 in the first period after giving up a power-play goal at the 6:39 mark and a short-handed goal two minutes later. Blake Battistoni put Saranac Lake on the board with an unassisted tally 9:35 into the first period.
Saranac Lake freshman Justin Farmer held down the goaltending duties and stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced.
Northwood Juniors win own tourney
LAKE PLACID - The Northwood junior boys hockey team captured the championship of its own tournament Sunday with a 4-2 victory over the Nichols School.
Matt Ward, Scott Fenwick, Shawn Lynch and Robbie Hennessey each scored goals to help secure the victory.
The tournament consisted of 42 teams playing in three different divisions.
Northeastern Clinton 56, Saranac Lake 31
CHAMPLAIN - The Northeastern Clinton boys basketball team scored 17 points in each of the first two quarters and held Saranac Lake below 10 on the way to a 56-31 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory Friday night.
The Cougars limited the Red Storm to six points in the first quarter and five in the second, then held on to put away Saranac Lake.
Kevin Morgan led the way offensively for the Red Storm with 12 points, followed by Kellen Munn with nine and Teddy Yanchitis with seven.
Tom Bedard scored 20 points to lead Northeastern Clinton.
