Fifth-graders Sierra LaValley, left, and Claire Denis, of L.P. Quinn Elementary School in Tupper Lake, read a two-voice poem they wrote that’s based on characters in the book “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan at Monday night’s Tupper Lake school board meeting. Students in teacher Bridget Callaghan’s classes read the book, which is about people who come from Mexico to work on farms in California, as part of a learning module that focused on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
