Police probe Broadway burglaries

SARANAC LAKE - Village police continue to investigate burglaries at a pair of commercial buildings on Broadway last month.

Police Chief Bruce Nason said sometime on the night of Dec. 10 a person or persons attempted to break into 60 Broadway, which houses Tri-Lakes Home Medical Equipment and Little City Haircutters, and Heath's Auto Repair at 91 Broadway.

"There was change or money missing from the businesses where entry was gained," Nason said. "Between the three locations, less than $200 was taken. For the amount of damage they did to get into the places, it wasn't worth it."

Nason said the burglar or burglars forced entry into the two buildings, one through a back door, the other through a window.

"Business owners should make their businesses as secure as they can," the chief said, "but there are some people, if they're determined to get in, they're going to get in."

Nason said police haven't made an arrest yet but continue to work on the case.

The December burglary spree follows a more extensive one in September, when seven businesses, mostly on Main Street and Broadway, were targeted and five were successfully broken into, typically through a back window or door. The suspects made off with unspecified amounts of cash that was left in cash registers overnight.

Police have had leads on those burglaries but they have yet to apprehend any suspects.

"We sent evidence to the state police lab for analysis, and we're still waiting for the results," Nason said. "Some of the evidence we recovered from those scenes, including DNA evidence, hopefully will help us identify who they are."
