World Healing Day

January 3, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

The one sign of the holiday season I look for every year, and the one which moves me most, is the global peace message on the hill overlooking the lake.

Then in 2010, I attended a World Healing Day event at 4 a.m. on Dec. 31 in Bellevue, Wash., and found a way that I could bring something home to add that hillside call for world peace.

In 1986, more than 500 million people gathered around the globe to share in a one-hour time of prayer and meditation for world healing and peace. More than 500 spiritual and peace-related groups from seven continents, 70 countries and every state in the USA participated.

It is encouraging to note that the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has reported "remarkable progress toward a potentially more peaceful world. There was a clean break in the pattern of a constant increase in the number of major conflicts with which the world had grown accustomed."

The Planetary Commission is expanding and gathering strength each year as a greater awareness of the event spreads around the world. A Saranac Lake group joined this effort last year and met again on Monday, Dec. 31 at 7 a.m. in the John Black Room at 89 Church St.

After all the gift giving and merrymaking of the holiday season, joining together in an hour of contemplation for the healing of our planet and an usher in a new era of peace on Earth is a special way to begin anew.
