SARANAC LAKE - Ruth H. Benham, of Saranac Lake, passed away peacefully in her home on Dec. 8, 2012. She was surrounded by the love of her family and caregivers.

Ruth was born on May 25, 1925, in Hamburg, and she liked to say she was raised as a "farm girl," strong and robust.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, David, who passed away in May 2006. Ruth is survived by her son, David L. Benham and his wife Mary Kay; two daughters, Linda Tarantelli and her husband Mike, and Rebecca Reyes. Ruth and Dave were also blessed with seven grandchildren: Megan and David Benham, Jessica Zobel (Doug Zobel), Matthew Cook, Maria Reyes, and Dana and Max Tarantelli. Ruth also had the extra love of two great-granddaughters, Lila and Eloise Zobel.

Her grandchildren remember their grandma for always being there to provide love and support and lots of yummy, buttery popcorn, great stir-fries, Jell-o powder finger dipping and "buttons." Ruth also loved playing endless games of rummikub with her friends and family and she always seemed to have that endless smile with lots of love and patience for anyone seeking help or guidance.

Ruth was involved in many activities during her life - she was always on the go. Some of her favorite things to do were cooking, sewing, canning, singing and volunteering. She was a 4-H leader, a bus driver, a gardener and an active member of the Presbyterian Church. She will always be remembered for her warm smile and her heart of gold. Ruth was the perfect example of a great mom, grandmother, teacher and friend.

Although Ruth struggled with dementia, she continued to be an active member of the community, thanks to her incredible caregivers. She was on a bowling team, volunteered at the Hhott house, helped with community clean up days, and took many walks around Moody Pond. She also enjoyed picnicking along the Riverwalk. Ruth loved good food and good company. She will be deeply missed by many.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be a memorial service to remember and honor Ruth's life at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Presbyterian Church with Pastor Joann presiding and a reception will follow in the Great Hall.
