NORWOOD - The Saranac Lake boys hockey team scored three goals in the final period Monday to lock up a 4-2 non-league victory over Norwood-Norfolk.
Grant Strack scored two of his three goals in the third period as the Red Storm broke a 1-1 tie for their second win of the season. Saranac Lake is 2-2-1.
Blake Darrah had a strong game in goal for Saranac Lake, stopping 39 of the 41 shots he faced. Norwood-Norfolk outshot the Red Storm 41-27.
Strack scored the first goal of the game at the 2:35 mark of the first period on an assist from Nick Bayruns. The Flyers answered late in the second period when Troy Novach connected after a pass from Tyler Fobare.
Eighth-grader Christian Thomas got the Saranac Lake scoring started in the third period with assists going to Chris Spicer and Strack. It was Thomas' first career varsity goal and came on a power play 1:30 into the period.
Strack increased the lead to 3-1 at the 9:58 mark of the third with assists going to Drew Sturgeon and Bayruns.
Norwood-Norfolk closed the gap to 3-2 at the 11:06 mark, but Strack put the game away with his third goal on an empty-netter with 15 seconds remaining.
Saranac Lake hosts Northeastern Clinton at the Civic Center on Wednesday.
Lake Placid 3, Salmon River 2
FORT COVINGTON - The Lake Placid girls hockey team improved to 4-1 with a 3-2 victory over Salmon River on Monday.
Linemates Brooke Reid, Samantha Barney and Kendra Manning accounted for the Blue Bombers' goals. Reid scored in the second period, while Barney and Manning each tallied in the third to secure the victory.
Lake Placid got on the board first when Reid took a pass from Barney and Manning. Salmon River answered five minutes later to send the game into the third deadlocked at 1-1.
Barney put the Blue Bombers ahead 2-1 with an unassisted goal 2:16 into the third, but Salmon River answered once again with a goal 4:14 into the period. Manning put the game away with 7:55 left to play when she took a pass from Reid.
Lake Placid outshot Salmon River 43-15, but were limited by Shamrocks goaltender Becca Leroux, who racked up 40 saves. Freshman Tanner Stanton recorded 13 saves for the Blue Bombers.
Moriah 55, Saranac Lake 40
PORT HENRY - The Moriah boys basketball team used a 15-7 third quarter surge to take control of a 55-40 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Saranac Lake on Monday.
Kevin Morgan scored 16 points to lead the Red Storm offensively, while teammate Teddy Yanchitis chipped in 13.
Moriah freshman Adam Jaquish led all scorers with 20 points to go along with his 10 rebounds. Mike Mero scored 12 points and Derek Brassard had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to contribute for the Vikings.
Saranac Lake hosts Ticonderoga on Thursday.
