SARANAC LAKE - Two people were hurt when their sport-utility vehicle crashed early this afternoon on state Route 3, just north of the village.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded at 1:42 p.m. to the accident scene, near the village sewer pump house on Route 3 between Pine Street and Trudeau Road, with three trucks and 12 members.

Witnesses who were driving behind the Dodge Nitro said it was heading toward the village when the driver suddenly lost control, veered into the guardrail on the west side of the road and rolled onto its side. Passersby called 911 to report the crash while others tended to the two people who had been inside the SUV, whom they described as an elderly woman and her granddaughter, until firefighters, rescue personnel and state police could arrive.

Saranac Lake Head Fire Driver Rick Yorkey said firefighters helped the driver and passenger get out of the vehicle. They were both transported to the hospital by the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad for treatment of what were described as minor injuries.

The highway was shut down as the scene was cleaned up; traffic was being detoured onto Pine Street and Trudeau Road. The road reopened by 2:30 p.m., and Saranac Lake firefighters returned to the fire station by 2:45 p.m.

State police were still working to determine what caused the accident.
