SARANAC LAKE - Two quick goals didn't help the Saranac Lake girls hockey team notch its first victory of the season, but it did enable the Red Storm to earn a tie on home ice Monday.
In a matchup of winless teams, Jordy McDougall and Danielle Patraw each scored a goal for Saranac Lake less than six minutes into the game, and from there, visiting St. Lawrence Central tallied twice as the Red Storm and the Larries finished in a 2-2 deadlock.
With her team leading 2-0, sophomore goaltender Katey Snyder came up big down the stretch for Saranac Lake, giving up just two goals while making 25 saves to help the Red Storm improve to 0-3-2.

St. Lawrence rallied to tie with a goal early in each of the second and third periods. Brandi Thomas scored 3:35 into the middle frame to cut Saranac Lake's lead to 2-1. Madee Derouche buried the final puck of the game, scoring at the 1:25 mark of the third period to forge the tie. Both teams were then unable to come up with a potential game-winning goal during the rest of regulation and five minutes of overtime.
Despite finishing with a tie, Saranac Lake head coach Erin Biek was pleased with her team's effort, which came on the heels of an 8-0 loss to Beekmantown on Saturday.
"We did a much better job tonight," Biek said. "We played like a team. We skated three lines and kept the pressure up most of the game.
"Getting shots on goal has been a huge goal of ours," Biek added. "We've been averaging about six shots a game, and that's simply not enough. We more than doubled that tonight."
The Larries had a 27-15 edge in shots on goal. Snyder made a number of sparkling saves to lead the Red Storm. Stephanie Boots recorded 13 saves for St. Lawrence.
"We came out kind of sluggish and then picked it up the next two periods," Larries head coach Tim Wagoner said. "We haven't scored a single goal in the first period this season, and again, we got down and had to dig out of a 2-0 hole. I think we did a nice job coming back, but their goalie played really well."
Thomas also picked up an assist on the second St. Lawrence goal to finish with two points. Both Red Storm tallies were unassisted.
Saranac Lake's next game is at home Saturday against Alexandria Bay, with the opening faceoff scheduled for noon.
