SARANAC LAKE - Each year, First Night Saranac Lake enlists the help of six area organizations or individuals to create festive, colorful banners for use in decorating the Harrietstown Town Hall during the annual celebration of the arts that takes place every Dec. 31 at venues in the village.
Time and talents this year were donated by Hobofest, Somabeats, Friends of Mount Pisgah, the Village Improvement Society, the Joy of Giving and Jackie Foster. The Decorator Shop ordered, hemmed and put grommets in the banners, and Coakley High Peaks Ace Hardware distributed the paint used to decorate them.
Four 3-by-5-foot banners will be unveiled at a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Cantwell Room at the Saranac Lake Free Library. Each banner creator will be invited to speak briefly about his or her organization's or personal mission, as well as the concept for their banner. Light refreshments will be served.
Two 3-by-15-foot banners will be unfurled down the front of the town hall during First Night's opening ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Dec. 31.
After the library reception, the "short" banners will be joined by their 17 predecessors and be on display in the Cantwell Room until New Year's Eve. Throughout December, the "long" banners from years past will hang between the pillars of the North Elba Town House (aka the Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center) and adorn the walls of the Adirondack Carousel.
