SARANAC LAKE - A dog fell through thin ice on Lake Flower and drowned Tuesday before it could be rescued.
Saranac Lake firefighters were called to the state boat launch on the lake at 1:26 p.m. after receiving a call from Virginia Slater, reporting that her dog had gone through the ice.
Two trucks and 12 firefighters responded. The dog was under the ice by the time they arrived and the department's members weren't able to rescue the animal before it drowned. The dog's body was recovered and returned to the owner.
Firefighters returned to the fire station at 3:09 p.m.
