Thanks for fixing flat tire

November 14, 2012

To the editor:

When I chose to go back to school a few years ago, I knew it would not be easy. There would be papers to do, teachers to impress and, not to mention, tests. Yet I have been tested a number of times over the years during that time, and it had nothing to do with math or psychology. Driving the long roads to Saranac Lake and, later, Plattsburgh were my real test. I have driven on slippery roads and had car problems, and yet I still managed to get to school.

This past month was no exception. The first "test" was when I hit a deer on the way. Luckily I was OK, and my car just needs a new headlight. (I wish I knew what happened to the deer.) I cannot tell you how many people stopped to see if I was OK. The police officer was nice, too.

Yesterday (Nov. 6) the test occurred again when I had a flat tire. I was almost in Saranac Lake. As soon as I pulled over, someone stopped to see if I was OK. I told him about my flat tire, and automatically he got out and changed the tire for me. I cannot tell you how many times I said thank you. He said his name was Chris (I think) and that he worked at the Saranac Lake post office. I was able to meet my friend in Saranac Lake before carpooling to Plattsburgh, and we managed to get to school just in time!

When I think of this past month, I guess a lot of people would say I have had my share of bad luck. I think just the opposite. Both days I ran into car problems, it was 6 a.m. and still dark out. Yet people still stopped to help. I doubt this would happen if I were to drive to Albany or some other urban area. I feel lucky to live in such a wonderful area that has caring and incredible people who are still not afraid to help. Incidentally, my field of study is social work. I can only hope I can give back to others the way these astonishing people have helped me!
