KINGSTON (AP) - Freshman Republican Rep. Chris Gibson has defeated Democrat challenger Julian Schreibman to represent a largely rural district in eastern New York.
The race for New York's newly drawn 19th District was a top priority for both major parties and attracted heavy spending by outside groups. Both Democrats and Republicans have represented the area in recent years.
The district includes the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson Valley between Poughkeepsie and Albany.

Until January, Gibson serves the 20th District, which reaches north as far as Lake Placid and part of Saranac Lake.
Gibson is a former Army colonel who won office amid the 2010 tea party surge. Gibson had cast himself as a moderate amid criticism from Schreibman that he was out of tune with the district.
Schreibman served as a federal prosecutor and as an assistant district attorney in Ulster County.
