MASSENA - Moriah captured the Section X/VII Class D football championship Friday night with a hard-fought 12-7 victory over Tupper Lake.
Moriah junior Cameron Wright scored his second touchdown of the game as time expired on the third quarter to give the Vikings a five-point advantage. Tupper Lake was unable to muster a scoring drive in the fourth and had to settle for the loss.
The defeat ended the Lumberjacks' season with a 3-7 overall record. Moriah will bring a 5-5 record into a state quarterfinal game next week.
The Vikings got on the board first Friday when Wright darted into the end zone from three yards out with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter. Tupper Lake answered late in the second quarter when Brock Tarbox caught a 29-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Mitch Keniston, followed by a successful point-after kick by Ian Gillis.
Moriah's high-powered rushing attack was hampered by three fumbles in the first half.
