ALBANY - The state Board of Elections has extended the deadline for absentee ballot applications to today as New Yorkers continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy.
The BOE announced its decision Thursday following an emergency meeting. The original deadline for applications via mail, fax or letter was Tuesday, but that deadline has been moved to today. The extension applies statewide, according to a press release.
Voters can still cast an absentee ballot in person at their local board of elections until Monday. Polls will be open statewide from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The state BOE also extended the deadline for absentee ballots to be returned to local boards of election by six days. The previous deadline was Nov. 13; it is now Nov. 19. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Monday, Nov. 5.
