SARANAC LAKE - Trudeau Institute is clarifying its position on the potential annexation of the biomedical research center campus into the village.
In a statement to the Enterprise, Trudeau spokeswoman Kim Godreau said a letter sent last week to village Mayor Clyde Rabideau and Harrietstown Deputy Supervisor Barry DeFuria by the institute's new president and director, Ronald Goldfarb, was meant to foster a discussion between town and village officials.
Goldfarb has asked the village and town to "deliberate on the matter and make a decision that is in the best interests of the greater community." But Harrietstown officials have said they can't have a discussion about annexation until they get a formal petition from Trudeau seeking annexation.
Godreau, in her statement, said Trudeau "is not currently filing a petition for annexation.
"To clarify, Trudeau's administration is not seeking annexation at this time," she wrote. "Instead, we hoped to encourage dialogue between the township and village to explore the best option for Trudeau's interaction with the overall community. Trudeau wishes to be aligned with the best interests of the both the village and township to leverage its potential impact, e.g. helping the emerging biotechnology industry spanning both civic entities."
