Old Military Road reopened after 2 months of work

LAKE PLACID - With two months of road work finally done, Old Military Road was reopened to the general driving public today.

Now there's no longer any need for a detour that meandered through Saranac Avenue, Wesvalley Road, Mill Pond Drive, Sentinel Road and Station Street. And with the detour, a temporary traffic light at Saranac and Wesvalley has been removed. During the stoplight's two-month existence, some local residents had suggested it be made permanent since the intersection is fairly busy even without the detour. Others said the light was a hassle that backed up traffic and should not remain longer than it had to.

Old Military Road is an Essex County highway, and the county oversaw the work done by Rifenburg Construction Inc. of Troy. The jobs included two major ones on either side of the Lake Placid firehouse: replacing the bridge over the Chubb River and realigning Riki Hill.

The road was closed for work in mid August. The original end date was Oct. 1, but around that time it was pushed back to Oct. 19 - the day the road was actually reopened.
