Bombers can’t connect against Willsboro

WILLSBORO - The Lake Placid girls soccer team was unable to convert on its many opportunities Wednesday and had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Willsboro.

The Blue Bombers unleashed 30 shots, but were stopped by the Willsboro defense and goalkeeper Renee Marcotte who made 22 saves. The game remained tied after two halves and two overtime periods.

Lake Placid's Liz Leff also earned a shutout, making four saves on the six Willsboro shots.

The Blue Bombers now have an 11-1-1 record in Northern Soccer League games and 11-3-1 overall.


Peru 1, Saranac Lake 0

PERU - Sam Spear scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute to lead the Peru girls soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Saranac Lake on Wednesday.

Mary Mazzella was credited with the assist after sending a ball to Spear on the frontline. Peru's senior goalkeeper Shannon Bombard stopped 15 shots to record the shutout.

Regan Kieffer turned away 12 shots in goal for the Red Storm, who fell to 2-12 overall and 2-11 in league games.

Peru held a 20-19 advantage in shots taken.

TUPPER LAKE - The Tupper Lake boys cross country team occupied the third through sixth positions as the Lumberjacks secured two wins Tuesday in a home meet.

Broyce Guerette placed third in 18:42, Anson Gagnier was fourth in 19:00, Josh Fletcher was fifth in 19:09 and Cam McGillis was sixth in 19:14 as the Lumberjacks downed Potsdam and Brushton.

Potsdam's Ethan Vinson won the race in 16:31.

In the girls' race, Gretchen O'Leary finished third in 21:30, Ari Bishop was fifth in 23:02 and Samantha Ormsby was sixth in 25:11 to lead the way for Tupper Lake, which didn't factor into the team scoring due to a lack of runners.

Madi Dow of Potsdam won the girls race to lead her team to a 15-40 victory over Brushton.
