LAKE PLACID - The first time Saranac Lake and Lake Placid met on the volleyball court this season, the Blue Bombers came through to pick up their only win so far.

On Wednesday, senior Nicole Viscardo and her Red Storm teammates made sure the Blue Bombers weren't going to earn their second victory and make it a season sweep in the friendly rivalry.

Behind a 17-point performance from Viscardo, which included 13 aces, Saranac Lake triumphed 3-1 to improve to 5-9 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

The Red Storm won by scores of 25-14, 18-25, 25-19 and 25-15 in the competitive match.

"Our serving was better. It was more consistent and we played a little more defense," Saranac Lake coach Diana Schwartz said. "We wanted this win pretty bad. The top two seeds (for the Class C playoffs) are locked up, but three, four and five are up for grabs and we're right in there. We'd love to have a chance to host a playoff game, but we still have a lot of work to do for that to happen."

Saranac Lake has two matches remaining, and they are both against the top teams that Schwartz was referring to. On Friday, the Red Storm hosts No. 1 AuSable Valley, then travels to Plattsburgh on Monday to finish the regular season.

Despite the setback, Lake Placid coach Donna Moody said she was pleased with her team's effort and performance.

"We're a little vertically challenged," Moody said with a smile after the match. "In the first game, we hurt ourselves with our serving, but we came back nicely in the second game. We were competitive.

"It's usually tight when Lake Placid and Saranac Lake get together," Moody added. "These girls play against each other in different sports, and some of them are even teammates. Obviously, both our teams want to win, but it's a friendly rivalry."

In addition to posting match-high numbers in aces and service points, Viscardo led Saranac Lake with five kills and chipped in three assists. Senior Shannon Stevens also turned in a strong performance for the Red Storm with 10 points, four aces, a team-high six digs and three kills. Sarah Parker was next in scoring with eight points and Emily Fountain contributed seven points, four aces and five assists in the win.

Serina Hayes was a force at the net for Lake Placid, which dropped to 1-12 in CVAC play. Hayes, a senior, had a match-high 13 kills, and tied for the team lead in assists with Carleigh Garrett. Brenna Garrett was Lake Placid's top point-scorer with nine.

Lake Placid will be at home Friday to face Peru, and wraps up the regular season on the road Wednesday against Northeastern Clinton.

"If we play like we did tonight, minus the serving in the first game, I think we have a chance to get some more wins," Moody said. "Our girls work hard and they don't quit."
