LAKE PLACID - Officials are looking into what caused a house fire on Old Military Road early Sunday morning.

The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 154 Old Military Road at 1:32 a.m. Sunday with four trucks and 22 members. The Keene, Saranac Lake, Wilmington, Bloomingdale and Paul Smiths-Gabriels volunteer fire departments provided mutual aid.

Firefighters said the building sustained 50 percent fire damage, with additional damage caused by smoke and water. The building was occupied when the fire started, but the occupants made it out safely before firefighters arrived at the scene.

An official with the fire department wasn't sure who owns the home but said the occupants are staying somewhere else for the time being. Essex County's online tax map shows the owner of the single-family home as Betty Charette of Mechanicsville, Va.

Firefighters were back in service by 6:19 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No additional information was available as of press time this morning.
