SARANAC LAKE - Village police have charged a Malone man with sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl here more than a year ago.
Raymond A. Lopez Jr., 55, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with three felonies: first-degree sexual abuse, second-degree attempted criminal sexual act and criminal solicitation. He also faces a pair of misdemeanors: forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child.
Patrolman Casey Reardon told the Enterprise Lopez sexually abused the girl while he was living in Saranac Lake in May 2011. He said Lopez was a friend of the girl's family.
The abuse allegedly took place in an apartment Lopez was renting. Lopez had forcible sexual contact with the girl but not intercourse, Reardon said. The girl apparently reported what had happened to her parents, who then contacted police.
Reardon described the arrest of Lopez as the culmination of more than a year-long investigation. One of the reasons it took so long, he said, was that police were waiting for DNA evidence to be analyzed at the state police crime lab in Albany.
Village police traveled to Malone Tuesday and took Lopez into custody with the assistance of a state parole officer, Reardon said. Lopez was brought back to Saranac Lake, arraigned in village court and remanded to the Franklin County Jail in Malone in lieu of $15,000 cash bail.
Lopez was still behind bars as of this morning, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Lopez, formerly of Canton, had been released from the state Altona Correctional Facility on July 20 after serving a year for fifth-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website.
He was arrested in October 2011 by members of the Franklin and Essex County Drug Task Force for allegedly selling the prescription drug hydrocodone to an undercover officer on three occasions.
