A 2-year-old boy who was reported missing Tuesday afternoon was found after a brief search.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation received a call about a missing child at approximately 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to an email DEC Region 5 spokesman David Winchell sent the Enterprise. The boy wandered off from a home in the AuSable Acres subdivision, Winchell said.

"Three DEC Forest Rangers in the area immediately responded (and) have begun searching the woods near the point (where) he was last seen," Winchell wrote.

Winchell said the child was located less than two hours later near Cross and Elm streets in AuSable Acres.

"(The) child was located by a couple with a seasonal home in AuSable Acres," he said. "Upon learning about the missing child they began searching an area around their home."

Winchell said the child was located less than a mile away from his last known location. He was wearing long pants, a long sleeve shirt and socks but no shoes, Winchell said.

"He appears to be healthy," he said.

Forest rangers and state police were assisted in their search by the Essex County Sheriff's Department as well as members of the AuSable Forks, Jay and Wilmington volunteer fire departments.
