Gearing up for a long journey

A monarch butterfly, newly hatched from its chrysalis, dries its wings Wednesday in a Saranac Lake flower bed to prepare for its first flight. Like other monarchs, this one will probably migrate very soon to Mexico and other southern locations; its offspring will make the return voyage next year.
