SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls soccer team picked up its first win of the season Thursday with a 3-1 Northern Soccer League victory over Peru.
Megan Moody had a goal and an assist in the second half as the Red Storm broke a 1-1 halftime tie to secure the win. McKayla Duffy and Annie Frenette accounted for the other two Saranac Lake goals.
"I'm proud of the resilience and tenacity our girls have shown this season," Saranac Lake coach Amanda Zullo said. "They work really hard during practice and in games. I am proud of how they kept their heads up and am glad it paid off for them today."
Saranac Lake improved to 1-7 on the season with the win.
Katie Buckley and Regan Kieffer combined to shoulder the goalkeeping duties for the Red Storm, making 11 saves in the process. The Indians held an 18-11 advantage in shots taken.
"Peru is a good passing team that is aggressive to the ball," Zullo said.
The Indians took a 1-0 first-half lead when Mary Mazella scored on a pass from Ashley Carpenter. Saranac Lake responded when Zoe Tyler and Anna Izzo hooked up with Duffy to send the game into the second half tied at 1-1.
Fifteen seconds in the second half, Moody found Frenette to give the Red Storm a 2-1 lead. Moody put the game out of reach two minutes later on a successful penalty kick that beat Peru goalie Shanna Bombard.
Zullo said Moody and Sienna Daviau were important offensively for the Red Storm, controlling the ball and setting up teammates.
Saranac Lake returns to action Monday at home against Beekmantown.
