Trustees approve new contract with highway workers

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid village Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday night to approve a new contract with village highway workers.

Village Mayor Craig Randall said labor attorney Brian Kremer informed him recently that negotiations on a new agreement with 13 highway workers at the village Department of Public Works have wrapped up. Those employees belong to the Civil Service Employees Association.

Randall said the memorandum of agreement includes an hourly wage increase of 36 cents effective Aug. 1, 2012, and another of 37 cents effective Aug. 1, 2013. Those represent wage increases of about 2 percent each.

The contract also allows highway workers to accumulate up to 96 hours of unused vacation and personal time, down from 120 under the previous deal.

"All comp time earned but not used as of July 1 of each year shall be paid to employees no later than the last payroll in July," the contract reads. Randall said village Treasurer Peggy Mousaw has been advocating for that change.

Randall said the new contract is consistent with agreements in place for other village workers.

The board also approved 2 percent raises for the treasurer, as well as department heads in DPW, the wastewater treatment plant, police, fire and electric. Hourly rates for three non-union employees - the administrative secretary in the police department, the court clerk and the sole full-time trolley driver - were also increased by 2 percent.

"The 2 percent is a platform we've developed right across the village, so it may be helpful for the labor unions to see that we're being consistent," Randall said.
