BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE - More than 60 rustic artisans from across the United States gathered at the Adirondack Museum on Sept. 8 and 9 for the 25th annual Rustic Furniture Fair.

Each year, artisans are honored with the Maker's and People's Choice awards, each determined by ballot: The rustic artisans select outstanding work by a peer; Rustic Furniture Fair visitors choose the winner of the People's Choice award.

The Post family, of L. Post Rustics, AuSable Forks, received the Maker's Choice Award. Larry and Joann Post, along with their children, have a passion for designing and building artistic furniture and cabinetry. Their work includes shaping precision-cut joinery, incorporating hand painting and carving, and applying twig and bark veneers. This was the fourth year the Posts exhibited at the Rustic Fair. Paul Lakata of Rustic Artworks, Johnstown, took home the People's Choice Award. He has been painting with oils and creating frames in the rustic style for 12 years. His first rustic show was at the Adirondack Museum nine years ago. Until this year, his main focus was oil painting and handmade frames. The "Steam Launch Wine Cabinet," a popular item at this year's show, was an idea that he had for a few years, and after last year's rustic show the decision was made to build it. The goal was to create something different than anything he had seen at the shows. The project started a week after last year's show and was completed one week before this year's show. Even though it is a functional wine cabinet, Lakata considers it "a piece of artwork" with furniture incorporated in.
