LAKE PLACID - A local man faces an arson charge after allegedly setting a fire outside apartments attached to the Northwoods Inn.
Lake Placid village police arrested George J. Peck Jr., 24, of Lake Placid, at 10:31 p.m. Sunday. He was charged with second-degree arson, a class B felony, and second-degree reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor.
The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department was called to a reported structure fire at the Northwoods Inn at about 11:53 p.m. last Thursday. Firefighters arrived to find a fire in a foyer area of several apartments attached to the Northwoods Inn, according to police. Firefighters and police determined the fire to be suspicious in nature, and an investigation was launched that led to Peck's arrest.
"There was some physical evidence that was obtained," police Chief Bill Moore told the Enterprise. He added that police interviewed witnesses who lived at the apartments.
Firefighters said a bag of construction debris had been set on fire. It was extinguished with only smoke damage to the building. The building had to be evacuated as a result of the blaze.
"It wasn't very bad," Moore said. "It was more the fact that that building was occupied; that's what was scary about it."
Peck was processed by police, arraigned in village court and remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail.
