Glad North Elba supports trail over rails

September 25, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

I am a resident of the town of North Elba and fully support the resolution recently passed by the town of North Elba board to remove the train track rails within the town.

We need a state-of-the-art recreational trail or bike path between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake like other towns and regions throughout New York state have. I have trained for many marathons on the 10-mile-long bike path between Lake George and Glens Falls, and have been so impressed to see so many families and people of all ages using it for walking, jogging, biking and in-line skating. It is also used for many winter activities.

As the rate of obesity continues to rise in New York state, we need to create more opportunities for people to engage in healthy exercise, not sedentary tourist activity like riding a train. Building a recreational trail along the train tracks would remove the opportunity for quiet and peaceful use of the trail.

Since there is no demonstrated economic benefit from the train, I applaud the town of North Elba board for passing the resolution to remove it and allow for the tremendous benefit in creating a recreational trail.
