To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who made the village's outdoor movie effort such a success. Our initial goal was to pull off one movie to celebrate the completion of the sidewalk project in downtown Saranac Lake. That one movie, "The Wizard of Oz," turned out to be so much fun and was so well received that it inspired us to turn it into a monthly series. Our second movie, "E.T.," was equally successful, and our third and final movie, "Willie Wonka," ended things perfectly with more than 130 people in attendance.
The outdoor movie series was a true grassroots effort. We had no budget, just a good idea and a handful of dedicated volunteers. Mark Kurtz provided the technical expertise while Tim Fortune helped us secure movies for public viewing without violating copyright laws. The Winter Carnival Committee generously allowed us to use their screen and projector, and the village of Saranac Lake provided the sound system and venue. Of course, you can't have a movie without popcorn and soda, and thanks to the DownHill Grill and Borracho Taco, we had both.
We were able to fund the movies through 50-50 raffles, popcorn and T-shirt and sticker sales. Cape Air also kicked in with a generous contribution of two round-trip tickets to Boston, which we were able to tie in with the "Willie Wonka" Golden Ticket theme and raffle off very successfully.
Jeremy Evans and Kelly Brunette from the village of Saranac Lake's Community Development office deserve a special thanks as they consistently went way above the call of duty. Additionally, a dedicated group of volunteers including Kim Godreau, Chad McCarthy, Stephen Perepeluk, Terry Fitzpatrick, Janie Bevilacqua and Mayor Clyde Rabideau helped ensure that each movie showing was a success.
Finally and most importantly, as with any event, it was the people in attendance who really made it successful and worthwhile. Thanks to all of you of who showed up to watch the movies and who inspired us to keep going. We are looking forward to continuing the outdoor movies next summer.
