LAKE PLACID - A figure skating coach has been arrested in Maryland in connection with an incident that occurred in the village of Lake Placid sometime last year.

New York State Police said in a press release that Genrich Sretenski, 50, was taken into custody Tuesday by the Howard County (Md.) Sheriff's Office on a warrant issued by Essex County Court in New York. Lt. Scott Heggelke of the NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation told the Enterprise he couldn't discuss the nature of the charges against Sretenski until after he is arraigned.

The case is being handled by state police and the Lake Placid Police Department.

Sretenski is a figure skating coach from Russia who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics. He has also performed with Stars on Ice, a popular figure skating show that tours the U.S., including an annual performance in Lake Placid.

Sretenski is currently being held in Howard County Jail outside of Baltimore, Md., pending an extradition hearing, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday.
