To the editor:
Dewey Mountain Friends, the Saranac Lake Rotary Foundation and the town of Harrietstown would like to thank all who cooked, baked, played and otherwise showed support for Dewey Mountain Recreation Center at the Summer Ski Jam Sunday (July 29).
Mount Pisgah provided a beautiful venue for a barbecue and music. We are grateful to Friends of Mount Pisgah and the village of Saranac Lake for hosting.
Derek Doty, with world-class barbecue crew Doug Doty and Paul Sorgule of Harvest America Ventures, put on a feed this town won't forget. It was heartening to see the community turn out in such strength for Dewey Mountain, even though we know some folks may really have come for Doty's steak.
The Olympic Training Center, Lakeview Deli, St. Joseph's Recovery Center, Downtown Diner, Adirondack Green Circle, Saranac Lake Teachers Association and Saranac Lake Rotary Club also fed us well with delicious summer-barbecue sides and desserts.
Musicians created the Ski Jam, and they came through with a great show: Celia Evans, Steve Langdon, the Barn Cats, the Blind Owl Band, Big Slyde and Roadside Mystic. Russell Feher of Fine Line Audio and Jeff Couture made everyone sound just right. MC Doug Haney, who by day is a U.S. Ski Team press officer, was masterful on the mic. Brioc Vaughn-Thomas made Blind Owl apparel; he and Big Slyde generously donated T-shirt profits.
The event was made possible by key donations from Best Western Mountain Lake Inn and Jim Murnane, Kiwanis Club of Saranac Lake, Compass Printing, Mark Kurtz Photography, Mike Lynch, Guide Boat Realty, Al and Katharina Ford, Val and Dave Trudeau, Nancy Bernstein and other friends.
The Lake Flower Avenue Grand Union helped provide drinks, plates and other items, as did Hannaford Supermarket, Price Chopper, Kinney Drug, Aubuchon Hardware and Nori's Village Market.
The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Donnelly's Ice Cream donated ice to cool Lake Placid Pub & Brewery's beverages, and the Saranac Lake Central School District provided kitchen prep space. Thanks to Sturdy Supply and Adirondack Medical Center for supplying tents.
Athletes also pitched in generously. Members of the USA Luge National Team gave wheeled luge rides. Coach Randy Young and the Saranac Lake High School Cross-Country Ski Team efficiently handled parking and cleanup.
U.S. team biathletes Lowell Bailey, Tim Burke and Annelies Cook spoke from the heart; they and their families are among Dewey Mountain's most steadfast volunteers.
Ampersound, Blue Line Sports, the Community Store and Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce graciously pre-sold tickets.
Bark Eater Trail Alliance has been a great partner. It was fun to party with them.
Finally, there was a wonderful crew of volunteers, too large to list within a 500-word limit. We are grateful to you all. Two made Summer Ski Jam extra fun: "Winter Games" President Ariel Lynch coordinated ice-ball relay and other sports, and she and volunteer coordinator Chrissy Hayden went above and beyond in every way.
The event raised $6,750 toward construction of a new base lodge and trail extensions at Dewey Mountain Recreation Center. For project details please see deweymountain.com.
