Why can’t rails and trail coexist?

August 2, 2012
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

All this talk about rails-to-trails is interesting to many of us who visit the Saranac-Lake Placid region. First off, we enjoyed the train ride, and we enjoy hiking and water sports in the Adirondack region. So why can't we have both railroad and trails on the same right of way? If the trails will bring in so much more revenue to the area, then the proponents of the trails should be willing to co-exist with the railroad and vise versa. Funding options could be paid usage of trails or state funding, privatization by a host of companies whose products will be used on the trails or maybe a few health insurance companies.

Regardless of the outcome, it seems that one side or the other will not be happy unless someone loses. Too bad.

Sincerely,

Robert Kasper
