To the editor:
Even for those who do not play or support rugby in our community, it was evident this past weekend by the increase in traffic, purchases at local retailers and cash spent in hotels, bars and restaurants in our community that rugby weekend was a huge success again this year. Every year our Can-Am Rugby Tournament attracts people of all ages and backgrounds from all areas of our country and the world. People who come here for rugby come back on vacation, come back for another rugby weekend or just come back because they lived here once before and want to see us again.
If I were to individually thank each person or even each group that contributes to the success of the weekend, it would fill an entire Enterprise. There is, however, one group that truly makes this weekend happen. Without their tireless efforts, folks like me wouldn't get to ride the wave of rugby in Saranac Lake. They are Jay Annis, Tony Elrod, Nichole Meyette, Patrick Giblin, Jeff Letson and their families and friends.
This group runs a tournament that brings people together, supports our local economy and gives many of us a sense of pride and belonging. The Mountaineers are proud members of the home team at our games, but the Can-Am Committee is at the heart of rugby in Saranac Lake. Without them, we are just another group of ruggers looking for a great tournament to attend.
The Can-Am Committee does so much more than could ever be asked of so few people, and they rarely get a pat on the back. In fact, they often find themselves cleaning up while the rest of the ruggers are already on the road or are having a cold one at the local bar.
If you see the Can-Am Committee members in town and you have a few extra bucks in your pocket this week because of the thousands of people that visited our community this weekend, or if you watched a game and enjoyed it, or if you have a friend or family member who played in the tournament, be sure to thank them. I am so grateful, and as an entire club, so are we, the Mountaineers.
