ELMIRA (AP) - Emergency officials say a tornado touched down in the city of Elmira and there are reports of several buildings damaged.
Chemung County emergency officials say tornado touched down after 4 p.m. in the Southern Tier city. They were assessing the situation and did not know if there were any injuries.
The National Weather Service issued its first tornado warning at 3:35 p.m. and have received reports of fallen trees and siding damage. The storm system was heading east.
Meanwhile, authorities are evacuating campers in tents from 10 state campgrounds across the state with a wave of severe storms expected through the afternoon and evening.
The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is also encouraging those in trailers, recreational vehicles and cabins to leave the 10 sites in the Allegany and Niagara regions of western New York and the Taconic and Palisades regions to the east.
Conservation officials are also advising campers in the Catskills and southern Adirondacks to seek shelter.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 32 counties through 9 p.m. today.
Utilities have reported about 5,000 customers with power outages in Steuben and Allegany counties.
