POTSDAM - several thousand National Grid customers in northern New York remained without power after a severe thunderstorm knocked down trees and utility lines and damaged several buildings.
The utility reported 16,000 homes and businesses in neighboring St. Lawrence and Franklin counties lost power when the storm rolled across the North Country Tuesday afternoon.
Some of the worst damage was reported in the St. Lawrence County village of Potsdam, where the roof on a liquor store collapsed and the roof on a pizza shop was torn off. Several other buildings were damaged. No one was injured.
National Grid says nearly 900 customers in Franklin County and another 1,300 in St. Lawrence County are without power this morning. In the Tri-Lakes area, which includes parts of Essex County, the company reported 2,500 customers out this morning. Some customers won't get their power restored until later tonight.
